One of the most imposing fortifications to be seen along Jersey's Five Mile Road in St Ouen's Bay is Kempt Tower, the finest example in the Island of a true Martello Tower. It was built in 1834 as a defence against French invasion and named after Sir James Kempt, one of Wellington's Generals at the Battle of Waterloo. While still retaining the true character of the building, Kempt Tower became the Visitor Centre for the Les Mielles conservation area in July 1985. Since that time, some 80,000 visitors have enjoyed the facilities available within the tower.
